actually had the Balloon Fiesta today at the ski resort Sattel to take place. Because of the Föhn wind is blowing, the event was canceled or postponed for early two weeks .
it was outside the Föhnregionen in eastern Switzerland today, but good weather balloon, at least in the morning. Once again I had the opportunity to work with Kurt and Pascal to be in the air. Just beautiful, especially because today almost all winning team by Gordon Bennett gas balloon race in 2010 along the road was.
And there's no better way to verify that you own wind and weather forecasting, as you get a comprehensive overview of current conditions in the different heights in a wider area. Of course, you also get a much better view of the clouds at the various levels of the atmosphere and experience the weather can easily close. Ballooning was supposed to be as regular training for meteorologists duty ;-)

| Föhnstimmung of the Santis. On the left of the peak height is Säntis tower, a hint "Kelvin-Helmholtz wave recognizable. |
|
| Föhnstimmung on Lake Constance and the Rhine Valley lower. Thanks to the inversion, it is on the ground (still) no wind. |
|
| Interesting snow distribution in the south Schussental of Mochenwangen (Ravensburg). In the flat valley could the snow thanks to ground-level keep cold air in the somewhat elevated ambient it melted. |
|
| man-made snow samples ... |

| track of the ride: Start at 8:40 in Ebnat Kappel / SG, landing at 12:20 in Berkheim in Memmingen. 3h 40min travel time, distance 120 km, max. Height: 2780 m |
The prognosis was generally not bad, except on one point: The wind was on the ground when landing a little stronger than expected, especially gusty. However, this was was still in the green area, and the landing problem.
few hundred meters above the ground we were 40-50 km / h road. Not really surprising that the wind is significantly attenuated on the ground, when the (thin) soil inversion is gradually degraded. All forecast models have shown something different. So I have done my training for today with great satisfaction ...
Thank you for the wonderful day to Kurt, Pascal, Jris and Tanja!
